The other main distinction to consider when you are determining what you are feeling is the difference between a sensation and a feeling. In the first chapter, I had you get in touch with your sensations of hunger in your body when it requires fuel. There will also be times when your body has the emotion of hunger when you are hungry for something besides food. This is a very important distinction that can help immense- ly when trying to stop eating for emotional reasons. If, at any time, you feel hungry and you are above 0 on the hunger scale, you are probably hungry for some- thing besides food. Go in and find it. See if you can find a way to satisfy it with something besides food. If you are unable to satisfy the hunger, be willing to allow it. Hunger does not need to be a scary emotion. It is very natural for us to be hungry for things we want and believe we need in our life. We don’t need to eat over it or run from it. We can do “hungry.” We can sit with our emotional hunger and come to the real- ization that if we are hungry for companionship, no amount of cheesecake will do the trick. Cheesecake, or any other food for that matter, cannot substitute for the love of another human being or our own self-love. Don’t be afraid of your hungers. See them. 90 • If IAm So Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight?
