Feeling Tool #4 Fat Is Not a Feeling How many times have you said that you feel fat? As if fat were an emotion or a way of being. You can have fat on your body, but you cannot be fat or feel fat. Your true being is weightless. You cannot just be your body. You cannot be your fat. Fat does not reside as an emo- tion in your psyche. Fat is merely tissue, stored potential energy. My clients argue with me on this one, but when you are “feeling fat” you are really feeling something else. Fat is another decoy emotion. It’s a good substitute for what is really going on with you. Go deeper. Look inside. Go beyond the fat: it’s a cheap substitute. What are you really feeling? Look at the list of emotions on the table and notice that fat is not one of them; decide which one you’re really going through. I will give you an example of how many of us use fat as a substitute for really connecting to ourselves. One of my clients lives alone and is newly divorced.
