Belief Tool #4 If You Don’t Like What You Are Feeling, Change Your Belief Any time you have a negative emotion you can ques- tion it. Why am I feeling sad? You might say, “I am sad because that man rejected me.” Then, ask again, “Why does that make you sad?” You might then say some- thing like, “It makes me sad because I am not attractive, lovable, or worthy of a man’s love.” HELLO! Belief System found! Now, we are really onto some- thing. The truth of the matter could be that the guy was gay, or intimidated because, perhaps, he thought he was out of his league; but you will never know because your negative belief system caused you to walk away when he didn’t respond the way you wanted him to. Whenever I find a belief system like this with a client, I jump up and down with excitement. (My client is usually in tears and despair at this moment.) “We found it!” I say. “Now, let’s get rid of it.” The genius author who taught me how to turn around belief sys- tems is Byron Katie in her book Loving What Is. She is the master of this with her four-question turn around. 124 • If IAm So Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight?
