Belief Tool #5 Believing that You Are Internally Rather than Externally Controlled This is where I break rank with many of my col- leagues. So many of the weight-control books I read are filled with suggestions for controlling the external environment. They recommend, for example, taking all the junk food out of your house, removing the bread basket from the table, not attending parties where you know you’ll be tempted, and avoiding peo- ple who cause you to feel anxiety. I say bring in the junk food and bring in the people. I am always telling my clients that I want them to be sit- ting at a buffet with all their favorite junk food, experiencing the worst day of their life, surrounded by people who drive them crazy and to be internally con- trolled. I want them to have the freedom and confidence that comes from the emotional work with- in, not from controlling the environment or other people. I actually encourage my clients to put them- selves in tempting situations and let the feelings come up. It is a wonderful tool to get access to belief sys- tems. Eventually, you get to the place of freedom where nothing can tempt you to dishonor yourself and your commitments. What MoD Telieve Is Who MoD A1e ! A29
