Future Tool #3 What Do You Really Want? Another exercise I do regularly with clients is to have them write a list of fifty things they want. For some reason, most clients cannot come up with fifty. It’s strange that we don’t think about what would make us happy on a regular basis. A much easier list to com- plete is what we don’t want. Most of us spend a lifetime coming up with things we don’t like. What do you real- ly want? You might start the list with items you want to buy and vacations you want to take; you can put down little items and big items, big dreams, and little conveniences. Did you know you were yearning for these things? I believe that what we genuinely want is very impor- tant information. I believe it is code for directions to our destiny. If we can figure out what we want and start doing what we want without being stifled by neg- ative beliefs or negative feelings, we can find our way to where we are meant to be: where our work in the world is and where our highest level of joy resides. When we follow our heart, so to speak, our life becomes more truthful and more effortless. Our pur- pose starts to illuminate and the path we are meant to follow gets clearer. 190 • If IAm So Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight?
