And finally, the hormone leptin is what I like to call the magic hormone. It makes us feel full and encourages us to move. It's the hormone made in our fat stores that lets us know we have plenty of fuel on board and we should stop eating and burn some of it for fuel. When insulin is low, leptin can be high. We feel fueled and energetic. But when insulin is abnormally high, insulin blocks the signal of leptin at the brain. The result is hunger, way too much hunger, overhunger. Overhunger is the cause and overeating is the effect. The solution is simple. Implementing it is challenging, but the answer is so clearly this: Eliminate sugar and flour from your diet, eat less often and dine in more often. Once you do this, you will become what we call "fat adapted." This means you will be efficient at using your body fat for fuel. You will have plenty of leptin on board, and hunger will be rare enough that you will genuinely forget to eat. Many of you will be able to implement this easily, and some of you will need more help. You will experience withdrawal, lethargy, and frustration in the beginning. But if you are able to manage your mind through this process, you will get to enjoy the benefits of never feeling overhungry again. 30 • If IAm So Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight?
